Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose density and strength. Weaker bones are more likely to break, especially in the hip, spine, wrist, or shoulder.

Why it is often missed

Osteoporosis usually does not cause pain until a fracture happens. Some people discover it after a fall, height loss, or a spine compression fracture.

Risk factors

Risk can rise with age, menopause, family history, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use, low calcium or vitamin D, certain medicines, and some medical conditions.

Osteoporosis is different from osteoarthritis: one affects bone strength, while the other affects joints.
