Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals forming in and around joints. It can cause sudden, intense pain and swelling.
Common flare pattern
Gout often affects the big toe, but it can also affect ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, or elbows. A flare may begin quickly and feel hot, swollen, and very tender.
Why uric acid matters
High uric acid can contribute to crystal formation, but not everyone with high uric acid has gout. Kidney function, diet, medicines, genetics, and other conditions can play a role.
Gout can overlap with kidney stones and chronic kidney disease, so repeated flares should be medically evaluated.
