Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation in the lungs. It can affect the air sacs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus, which makes it harder for oxygen to move into the blood.

What can cause it

Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or aspiration of material into the lungs. Flu, COVID-19, and RSV can sometimes lead to pneumonia.

Common symptoms

Symptoms may include cough, fever, chills, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and fast breathing. Older adults may have confusion or weakness instead of classic symptoms.

Breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, severe weakness, or high-risk medical history should be evaluated urgently.
