COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is a long-term lung disease that makes it harder for air to move in and out of the lungs.
What COPD includes
COPD often includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or features of both. Smoking is a major cause, but air pollution, workplace dust, fumes, and genetics can also contribute.
Common symptoms
Symptoms can include shortness of breath, frequent coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and mucus production. Symptoms may slowly worsen over years.
COPD is different from asthma, though both can affect breathing and may sometimes overlap in symptoms.
