Insulin resistance means cells do not respond to insulin as efficiently as normal. The pancreas may make extra insulin to compensate, but over time blood sugar can rise.
Why it matters
Insulin resistance is commonly linked with type 2 diabetes, weight gain around the abdomen, fatty liver, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
Can you feel it?
Many people do not feel insulin resistance directly. It is often found through blood tests, related conditions, or signs such as prediabetes.
Because it can develop quietly, insulin resistance is best discussed with a clinician when risk factors or abnormal lab results appear.
