Eczema is a group of skin conditions that cause inflammation, dryness, itching, and irritation. Atopic dermatitis is the most common type.

Common symptoms

Eczema may cause itchy patches, redness or discoloration, dry skin, cracking, thickened skin, or oozing during flares. Scratching can make irritation worse.

Triggers

Triggers can include soaps, fragrances, allergens, sweat, stress, cold weather, heat, fabrics, infections, or dry air.

Eczema can occur with allergic rhinitis and asthma as part of an atopic tendency.
