Lag is a delay between what a player does and what the game shows or confirms. Players often use the word for online delay, but it can also describe stutters caused by low performance.

Network lag

Network lag happens when data takes too long to travel between the player's device and the game server. High ping, packet loss, weak Wi-Fi, or overloaded servers can make online play feel delayed.

Performance lag

A game can also feel laggy if the device cannot render frames smoothly. In that case, the issue is closer to low frame rate than internet delay.

Lag matters most in competitive games because small delays can change aiming, movement, timing, and hit detection.
