DNS, or the Domain Name System, translates human-readable domain names into the IP addresses computers use to connect.

The internet’s naming directory

When a person enters a domain, DNS helps locate the service behind that name. Resolvers, authoritative servers, records, and caching cooperate to return an address or another service destination.

Names have several record types

A records point to IPv4 addresses, AAAA records to IPv6, and MX records identify mail servers. TTL values control how long resolvers may reuse an answer.
