What is an IP Address?

An IP address is a numerical identifier assigned to a device or network interface so data can be routed to it.

An IP address identifies an interface for network communication. Private addresses work inside local networks, while public addresses can be routed across the internet.

Address does not mean person

One public address may represent many devices through network address translation. Addresses can also change, so they are not a permanent identity or reliable proof of who used a connection.
