What is a Conductor of Electricity?

A conductor of electricity is something that allows electricity to pass through it easily. Think of it like a water pipe that lets water flow smoothly. Just like water needs a pipe, electricity needs a conductor to travel through. Materials like metals are great conductors. For example, copper, which is often used in electrical wires, is one of the best conductors of electricity.

Electricity flows because the material has tiny particles called electrons, and in a conductor, these electrons can move around easily. When you switch on a light, the electricity travels from the power source, through the wires (the conductors), to the light bulb. Without a good conductor, the electricity wouldn’t flow, and the light wouldn’t turn on!

Not everything is a conductor, though. Materials like rubber or plastic stop electricity from flowing and are called insulators. That’s why wires are often covered in plastic – it keeps the electricity inside and keeps us safe!
