Special education is instruction and support designed for students whose disabilities or learning needs require individualized services. The goal is to help students access learning, make progress, and participate as fully as possible.

What special education may include

It may include specialized teaching, speech services, occupational therapy, behavior support, assistive technology, modified materials, accommodations, or a different service setting when appropriate.

Connection to IEPs

Many special education services are organized through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The plan describes goals, services, supports, and how progress will be tracked.

Special education is not one place or one method. It is a set of supports matched to an individual student.
