An elective course is a class that students can choose from a list of options. It may still count toward graduation, but it is usually less fixed than a required core class.

Why students take electives

Electives let students explore interests, build useful skills, try a new subject, or add depth to a major. Art, coding, public speaking, music, psychology, business, and design can all be electives depending on the school.

Elective versus prerequisite

An elective is chosen by the student. A prerequisite course is required before another class. Some electives may still have prerequisites if they are advanced.

Electives make an education plan more personal while still fitting inside the broader curriculum.
