What is IS?

“IS” is a very small word, but it has a big job in sentences! It helps us connect ideas and describe things in English. “IS” is one of the most common words we use to talk about the present. We use it when we want to tell what something is or what someone is doing right now.

Think of “IS” like glue that holds parts of a sentence together. For example, when you say, “The cat is fluffy,” “IS” helps connect the cat to being fluffy. If you say, “She is happy,” “IS” links the person to how she feels. Without “IS,” our sentences wouldn’t make sense, and it would be hard to say what we mean!

Even though it’s small, “IS” is powerful because it helps us communicate clearly. We use it all the time to describe the world around us, tell stories, and share information. Next time you speak or write, notice how often “IS” helps you express your thoughts and make sentences complete. Isn’t it cool how such a little word can do so much?
