What is an Atom?

Atoms are tiny building blocks that make up everything around us. Imagine you have a big Lego castle. Each small Lego brick is like an atom. Just like how you can’t see the individual Lego pieces from far away, atoms are so tiny that we can’t see them with our eyes. They are the basic units of matter, which means they form everything we can touch, see, and even the air we breathe!

What Are Atoms Made Of?

Even though atoms are incredibly small, they have their own parts! An atom is made up of three main parts: protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  1. Protons are tiny particles with a positive charge. You can think of them like tiny, positive magnets. They sit in the center of the atom, called the nucleus, which is like the heart of the atom.
  2. Neutrons are also found in the nucleus. They don’t have any charge at all, so they’re like neutral magnets. Neutrons and protons stick together tightly in the nucleus.
  3. Electrons are very small particles that zoom around the nucleus in orbits, like planets around the sun. They have a negative charge, and they move super fast!

How Do Atoms Work?

Atoms are like tiny puzzles that fit together to create everything we see and touch. Different atoms can join together to make molecules. For example, when two hydrogen atoms join with one oxygen atom, they create water! That’s why when you pour a glass of water, you’re actually holding billions and billions of tiny atoms all joined together.

Atoms are important because they are everywhere! They are in the air, in your food, in your toys, and even inside you. Scientists study atoms to understand how everything works and to invent new things like medicine and technology.
